On 5 December, Bengali settlers built a hut on a five-acre land belonging to Doyal Chandra Chakma in the village of Harikaba under Baro Kattoli Mouza in Langudu Upazila, Rangamati.
The land is registered in his name in 1975 (settlement case No. 1205 [D] 1975).
One Bengali settler named Md. Kalam, son of Mokbul, of Bhaibone-chara Guchchagram, has been trying to grab the said land since 2021. In that year he forged documents and filed a case claiming ownership of the said land, thus embroiling Mr. Chakma’s family into a legal battle.
To defend their land, Mr. Doyal’s daughter, Subhadra Chakma, filed a counter-suit in the court, submitting documents pertaining to the title of the land.
Hearing both the parties, the Judge’s court of Rangamati issued an order prohibiting either party from entering the land until the disposal of the case.
However, Md. Kalam did not give two hoots about the court order and built the hut on the night of 5 December.
In protest, the Jummas held rallies and boycotted Bhaibone-chara bazar, forcing him to vacate the land.
